Give Me Jesus

I was excited when I opened the envelope. One of my friends not only gave me a birthday card but to my surprise I found neatly pressed between the pages a gift card to be redeemed at the Family book store. This gave me a wonderful excuse to go and check out their new store across from the mall.  The new carpet smell filled the room along with lots of inspiring Christian merchandise that filled the neatly arrange racks. It was all quite impressive, yet I didn't find anything that "I had to have." However, Donna did! Which is normal - Upon entering a store, the women in my life always seem to find something they need. "No problem" I thought. But I slowly saw my gift card moving toward purchasing cards, nick-nack gifts and other Christian stuff. As the cashier "rings" up Donna's (I mean our) stuff, she refers us to a select group of things that could be purchased for only five bucks. I saw a Jeremy Camp CD and thought, "What the heck. For five bucks you really can't go wrong."

The next day I played the CD and was impressed by the music. There were a couple of songs that I chose to pass on to the Praise Team to consider for worship. But there was one song that really caught my attention. I haven't heard it played on Way FM. Chances are it's not going to be a "mega" hit. But I really like the song perhaps because of its simplicity. I am firm believer that some of the greatest gifts in life come in simple packages. I played it for Donna and she said, "I think I would like to sing that song at church with Steve Miller."

The title of the song is called "Give Me Jesus". There is some repetition to these verses but the main lines are:

In the morning, when I rise, Give me Jesus.
When I am alone, Give me Jesus.
When I come to die, Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world
Just give me Jesus.

I had a soothing conversation with Bob Proudfoot yesterday. Bob and Alice were active members of our church for several years before moving up to Vero Beach. I was amazed they didn't move to North Carolina like so many others. They were very happy in their new home and they got "the phone call" about the "C" word. Alice had cancer and fought it for the last couple of years until the cancer took its toil. Bob shared with me that he and his daughters were with her when she died. I am sure their bedside presence gave Alice a great deal of comfort in her final days. Knowing that the ones she loved the most in this life were only a whisper away, I am sure, played an important role in preparing her for her next life.

Bob shared a piece of information that was inspiring. He had told Alice before she died, "Honey, I am envious that you are going to heaven. I wish I could take your place, but I can't. I know that heaven is going to be beautiful, beyond measure!"

I have walked with hundreds of people through the "death experience". What seems to me to be most important and powerful is when death knocks nothing else matters to people but Jesus. Just give me Jesus! I have found, it doesn't matter if you are 16 or 86 and you are dying - Just give me Jesus. Whether you are the parents of a 16 year old who was killed in a tragic car accident or the husband to an 86 year old who looses her bout with cancer - Just give me Jesus.

I have always found it peculiar how we put so much focus on "worldly" things throughout our life, and yet, when life comes to a close all we want is Jesus. Just give me Jesus. I think Jeremy Camp has a strong message about life, death and eternal life. I like my new CD. You never know what "jewel" you might find on the "bargain" rack, yet there is nothing "cheap" about God's grace. After all, he did just give us Jesus.

Youth Group

I am writing this as I have a little break during youth week.  It has been a great week so far.  Our Hawaiian luau was fantastic and to see some of you hula, and dressed in grass skirts was fantastic.  Also congratulations to Logan on being the bowling champ from Monday night.  With a High score of 115 he took home the $$$$$.  If that whole smart thing doesn't work out there may be a spot for you on the professional bowlers tour.  Tonight is Bible study and Ice Cream...Thursday 6pm is movie night in the old sanctuary...Friday is Putt-Putt and Taco Bell meet at the Putt-putt at 7pm Saturday's Olympics has been changed to Sunday Youth Group...(there is a wedding here and that is just not a good combination) So make sure you are marking your calendars.

Can you believe that summer is almost over and school is about to start.  With that being said I want to say how excited I am about this upcoming year.  We are going to be changing some things here within the youth program to make sure that we can serve your students better.  So I want to invite everyone to a parents meeting on Sunday August 17th at 8:00 after youth so we can tell you what we are thinking.  I know that as you are reading this bells and whistles are going off but don't worry nothing is written in stone (cause stone if heavy and hard to carry).  All I know is that I am excited for the possibilities for the future.

Mark on your calendars September 6-7 for Rock the Universe.  We will make our yearly journey to Orlando for a great night of concerts and rides.  Check out www.rocktheuniverse.com to see all the bands that will be going.  The cost will be $75 for the weekend that covers your ticket and hotel.  To sign up see Barkley.  The deadline is August 20 to be guaranteed a spot.
