Words from Harold
“Going with the Flow”
Recently, I mentioned in my sermon that one of my favorite places on earth is the Rainbow River. The old timers who live in Dunnellon call it the “Blue Run”. On a clear sunny day the water indeed looks as royal as the waters that flow through the Gulf Stream off the Treasure Coast. The Blue Run is not only a great recreational spot for tubers, fisherman and swimmers but I believe it’s one of the most peaceful places on the planet one could live. In the late evening when everyone has cleared off the frigid fed waters I believe it resembles what John wrote about in Rev. 22 "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life as clear as crystal, flowing down from the throne of God and of the Lamb……running down the middle of the great street of the city."
As Don Piper reminded us that heaven is real… and to drink deep of that river I believe will be a real blessing. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. (Rev. 21: 6) John describes heaven as a place where there is no death, pain, crying, or tears.
That verse is one of my favorite to read at memorial services. There is something special about that specific verse in the Bible that has brought comfort to many families who are grieving the loss of a loved one. For many of us who live with so much physical, emotional and spiritual pain, there seems to be some sort of solace in knowing that there will be no more pain…just peace.
One of my favorite old hymns is written by Horatio Spafford entitled, “It Is Well with My Soul”. As tradition has it, he wrote the song on a ship going back to burying his family that was tragically killed. There appears to be a spiritual poetic justice to these words that perhaps ring true for all us who have stared death in the face and had faith that heaven is real, Jesus is real, and eternal life is real.
“When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; what ever my lot, though has taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.”
I told a story in my sermon about Fred Kingery who was gracious enough to host a huge district event when I was living in Dunnellon. Fred also loaned me a canoe that day to help me keep up with the kids. Counting 300 bobbing heads on a river is a daunting task. We all survived, but the aftermath wasn’t easy for me as I suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration. Fighting the current and paddling up and down the stream took its toil on me. It wasn’t so much fun Row, row, rowing my boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream. By days end, believe me, it wasn’t so dreamy! It was more like where is the end to this river so I can go to bed.
As I shared with the congregation, “Going against the current of God’s grace can cause a great deal of heartache, despair and pain.” Going with the flow of God’s love always leads to a reservoir of peace… not pain.
I found it ironic that having shared that story about Fred then I received a phone call from him that Sunday afternoon. He called to tell me that his wife, Doris, had died earlier in the week. I actually performed their marriage ceremony around 15 years ago. That was the second time I received that call from Fred, 17 years ago, he shared with me his wife Barbara died of Leukemia. They were married 49.5 years.
They both loved the river dearly. Their lazy boy chairs were always positioned in the den so they could watch it all day long if they desired. Fred named his place many years ago “Living Waters”. I believe he got it right. I am not sure what Barbara and Doris thought about as they watched the river float by all those years, but I do know they went with the “flow” of God’s love. Going with the flow seems to lead to peace, more importantly, eternity..
