HEROES Summer Camp
Boynton Beach, Fla. - March 2008 - Following the success of its summer 2007 debut, Boynton Beach's Faith United Methodist Church’s (FUMC) HEROES summer camp is offering even more activities to campers this year including soccer, chess, tone chimes and French lessons; preschooler exercise classes and more. The camp, which runs from June 9-Aug. 1, is open to 3- to 14-year-olds and is held entirely on-site at FUMC. Many activities will take place in the church's new 22,000-square-foot Family Life Center.
The camp offers a perfect mix of recreational/educational fun and a message about the importance of helping those in the community and across the globe. While campers will enjoy exciting events including a petting zoo, water days, cooking classes, carnival day, bible time, a bicycle rodeo, dance, drama activities, daily team play, bounce houses and much more, they'll also hear from guest speakers such as an NFL football star, local TV news personality and others.
Scientific programs include reptile and underwater animal shows, a weekly butterfly presentation, and an eco-program. Weekly themes will include "Animals," "Hawaiian," "Western," and "Under the Sea."
Plus, campers will get a first-hand perspective about reaching out to the less fortunate from representatives of local organizations such as West Palm Beach's CROS ministries for underprivileged children, the Caring Kitchen hot meal program in Delray Beach, and the Boynton Beach Soup Kitchen. Speakers will also explain the heroism of servicemen and women in Iraq, the needy in Africa, and Project Linus for sick children in the hospital. Each week will be dedicated to a different organization or cause, and campers will have the option to collect inexpensive items to donate, and write letters, and/or make cards.
Preschool-age campers will be led by preschool and kindergarten teachers. Counselors leading all other all groups are trained to work with youth in the service of Jesus Christ.
"HEROES stands out from other camps in that it not only offers endless activities for the children to enjoy, but also a valuable lesson about what it means to help others," said Donna Hendren, camp organizer. "We want them to remember what a great time they had, but also carry the lessons they learned about caring for others and the love of Jesus Christ with them into adulthood."
FUMC's children's ministry is taking up collections to create camp scholarships, which will allow some less fortunate children to be able to attend.
Three- and 4-year-olds have the option to attend half days from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. or 12:30-4 p.m. All other ages attend full days from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Early and After Care is available. Half day camp prices are $75 per week and full day prices are $150 per week. All children must be fully potty-trained and three years old by June 1.
